Back to sea

Okay so its been about two years since my last post and that is becauase I haven't had anything to blog about since I've been posted to CFNES that entire time. Well as of the end of July 2011 I'm back onboard Athabaskan.

We are sailing pretty much as soon as I get there and it is going to be a trip of firsts for me. I will be posting again once we get under way so stay tuned for some new pictures of new and exciting people and places.

Still At Sea

August 28th 09:45LST

I wish there was more for me to blog about but there isn't. Yesterday the boarding party got to go to work and boarded a dow. That's about the highlight of the trip so far. We haven't heard too much from the other ships. We are supposed to be RASing a French ship sometime soon but I don't know when. If it happens I'll try and get some pictures of the ship.

The big thing onboard today is the 10K run that is going on. Its a charity thing, all proceeds go towards the United Way. As you may have guessed I'm not participating. I only run if I'm being chased.

Well I guess thats all for today. If anything interesting happens I'll be sure to make an entry.

At sea

August 25th, 2008 04:20LST

We have been at sea for about two days now and nothing too exciting has happened. We met up with Iroquois and Calgary today. I was in my rack since I was off watch but we RAS'ed Iroquois. When I got up for the afternoon watch there were boat transfers going on so I got a couple good pictures of both ships.

We have received orders to head for the horn of Africa to hunt for pirates. Apparently 3 ships in the last week have been hijacked and we are to go and see if we can't do something about the pirates.

For those of you who remember my early days in the navy, I was on HMCS Preserver (Protecture's sister ship) as a boatswain and I did the Somalia mission. Which of course is the Horn of Africa. The fact that I'm headed back there right now is kind of surreal. Its one part of the world I never expected to or really wanted to see again.

Besides the fact that we are going pirate hunting the big topic of conversation has been the feds cancelling the JSS (Joint Support Ship) project. Every one seems pretty disappointed about it. That project was going to be the beginning of a new era for the navy, and now its gone. I think what is worst is that nobody really seems surprised by it. I guess we have all become used to the feds making promises and then not following through.

Alot of us are starting to seriously wonder what kind of future the navy has, if any at all. The 3 remaining destroyers are on their last legs, these tankers are just about done, and the frigates are already at mid life. And there isn't any solid plans to replace any of these ships. I've heard more than one musing that this is the beginning of the end for the Canadian Navy. I can only hope that this isn't true. I don't look good in green.

Its About Time

Hello again all. Not that anybody is actually reading this since I am so delinquent in posting. But I have decided it is time to post all my pictures and stories to go with them from my around the world adventure. I am starting work on the whole mess tonight and I am actually hoping to have some of the pictures up tonight. We'll see how it goes.

Hopefully whoever reads this will get something out of it. I had an amazing trip and saw a lot of interesting things and places. I will do my best to tell you about everything and what it was like.

Gulf Trip Part 1

August 22, 2008 15:15 GMT+4

Since I don’t have access to my blog while I’m onboard I thought I would make my entries into a word doc and then post them en masse when I get home. I wish I could post as the trip went on but due to security reasons DND has seen fit to deny access to sites like face book and blogs so this will have to do.

As you all know I left on the 17th of August to meet a ship that was already at sea. What I didn’t tell you all is that I was leaving to meet HMCS Protecture in the Persian Gulf. I met her in the port of Fejir in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). My flight took me from Halifax to Montreal then to Zurich then Dubai, Muscat then finally back to Dubai. Yah it was fun. When all was said and done I was on the go for 40 hours straight with out any appreciable sleep. It was military logistics at its best let me tell you. I met Protecture in Fejieer on the 19th around 10:00 LST which is a difference of 7 hours from Halifax. I left Halifax at 14:30 AST on the 17th. So do the math. Can you say not happy?

After my ordeal I finally started settling in on board (i.e. cleaning out a locker so I had a place to put my kit and making my rack). Once that was done it was a decent meal and a hot shower then about 24 hours of sleeping on and off just trying to straighten out my internal clock.

Okay now I’ve caught up on most of my sleep and I am functioning on some sort of level I figure I’ll go out and check out the port. Well here is another disappointment. There really isn’t much of a port. What is laughingly referred to as down town has two crappy little plazas and not much else. There is lots of construction going on, but nothing is built yet. The older guys tell me this is what Dubai was like 20 years ago during the first gulf war. So maybe I’ll come back in 20 years.

EAU is a different world all together, the class system is very entrenched here and is not going anywhere anytime soon. The Emeratie royals are on the top, followed by the nationals (Emeraties), then white men, then women, then the immigrant workers. And this applies to all areas of life I’m told. From service in line to fights in the street; the person higher on the ladder is always going to get preference regardless of the circumstance.

I took some pictures of different things between the ship and where the bus drops us downtown. Check them out.

The city is surrounded by these ancient mountains. They are so old and dry they actually look more like huge piles of dirt than mountains.

Unfortunately this fort wasn’t open to the public while I was here. There is an old city near the fort as well. I can only assume that it dates from the time of the Pirate coast and Tructial coast times. In the background of the one picture you can see a high rise under construction.

This picture shows more of the huge amount of construction going on in the city. Once again the mountains are right on the edge of where people live. The city is between the mountains and the ocean.

This is a picture of a typical housing section I saw. Squat smooth buildings. Note the piles of rubble from near by construction sites.

This was probably the most impressive structure I saw in the city. I’m guessing it is an office building of some sort. It is in the heart of ‘downtown’.

Even though you hear about the ‘decadent western infidels’ from this region all the time, they just can’t seem to avoid our influence. This KFC was one of a few western fast food chains I saw in the region. Everything from DQ to Pizza Hut.

Okay so there you have it... My first adventure in to the middle east since my 20's. Heck even then I didn't really make it to the middle east I only went as far as Africa. Anyway there will be more to come over the next few days. The plan is to post everything about the trip over the next several days in the order they happened. Here's hoping all goes well.

Shore posting my butt!

Okay I haven't even been at CFNES for a month and I've already been attach posted to a ship at sea. For obvious reasons I can't say which one or where I'm going. So I will be out of touch for a while, hell now I can't even blog while I'm sailing. I don't have access to face book or my blog while I'm at sea. So if you want to get in touch with me you'll have to email me. ( littlejohn.pw@forces.gc.ca ) I'm assuming that is going to be my email, since its been that at every other unit I've been attached to.

When and if I get on a computer that allows access to my blog I will update it. Until then everybody enjoy the rest of your summer and I'll see you when I get back.

Sunday, August 10, 2008

Hello again all. I know its been a while since my last post so I figured time to post again. Lets see whats new and exciting. Well I was in St. John's for Canada day and participated in the Beaumont Hamel Memorial Day Parade I'm the one behind the Airforce guy.

Before the day of the parade is was cold wet and miserable weather and I ended up sailing out of St. John's with a sinus infection. Yippee.

Above are two pictures of St. John's harbour and on the right is a picture of Signal Hill where Marconi sent the very first Trans Atlantic signal from.

In all the pictures you can see the wonderful grey weather that was hanging over the city for the first 4 days we were in port. Hence the reason I got sick as a dog. I guess the fact that I got falling down stinking drunk the first night in didn't help. But it was fun.

Just before we sailed for St. John's I got a big surprise... I'm posted off of Athabaskan to the Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School (CFNES for short). I am up at CFNES now and I am a Lab Assistant. Yep thats right I am helping new sailors learn their trade. How scary is that.

This means no more sailing for me for a while. The posting should be for 2 years but I doubt it will last that long.

I"ll post again soon.
